A single-bottle spirits gift box has to do one job perfectly: hold that exact bottle still through courier handling, shelf display, and the unboxing moment. Whisky, brandy, tequila. Start with the bottle, not the label

Two bottles marked 750 ml can differ in height, shoulder profile, maximum diameter, and filled weight. That is why an insert cut for one bottle often will not accept the next batch. We size inserts from physical bottle samples, not from stated capacity. Three measurements drive the tooling: overall height, maximum diameter, and filled weight.

Send us one bottle. A production sample, not a render. We measure it, weigh it filled, and build the insert around those numbers. If you have two bottle shapes in the same range, tell us up front. We will design for the larger profile so both fit, or we will tell you to split the run. One insert cannot serve two very different shoulders.

Four-point hold, no unsupported neck

The insert holds the bottle at four points, with no unsupported area at the neck or shoulder. That rule is the difference between a box that survives transit and one that arrives with the neck snapped inside. Unsupported shoulders let the bottle rock during vibration. A neck that floats can take the full force of a drop.

Our check is simple: load the bottle, shake for ten seconds, no movement; tilt to 45 degrees, no slide; invert, no release. We run that on every new insert design before tooling is approved. If it fails, the insert gets reworked. No exceptions.

Board and facing that hold their shape

Board: 1200 g greyboard, 1400 g recommended for spirits, with 157 g+ specialty or coated facing paper. We do not use recycled greyboard, which collapses, or high-moisture stock, which warps. Spirits bottles are heavy. The board has to hold that weight through stacking and drops without the walls bowing inward.

Facing paper is not decoration. It is the surface that carries your brand. We use specialty papers and coated stock that take foil and print cleanly. Dark facing colours like black, deep blue, and burgundy carry hot-foil best. Those are the colours buyers choose when the box has to feel expensive before the bottle is even seen.

Three structures, three different jobs

Rigid lid-and-base is the premium gifting choice. Slow opening, strongest ceremony, bulky. The lid lifts off and the bottle sits in a velvet or foam tray. That is the box for a collector's edition or a corporate gift that needs to feel heavy and important.

Magnetic flip-top suits shelf display and repeated opening. The bottle stays visible, the lid flips back, and the magnet holds it shut. Magnet position precision matters here. Our control tolerance on magnet position is plus or minus 1 mm. A misaligned magnet means a lid that does not close flat, and that ruins the first impression.

Foldable rigid feels like rigid but ships flat. That matters when you are exporting empty boxes to be filled at a different location. Creases must not crack, corners must sit at 90 degrees when erected, and the magnet position tolerance still applies. It is the practical choice for wineries and distilleries that fill on site.

Control tolerances and colour

Our control tolerance on inserts is plus or minus 1 mm, box body plus or minus 2 mm. For foldable boxes, creases must not crack, magnet position plus or minus 1 mm, corners 90 degrees when erected. Those numbers are not marketing. They are what we check on every production run.

Colour control uses Pantone matching, first-article approval, and mid-run sampling. Black, deep blue, and burgundy are hardest to hold. Dark colours show every inconsistency in coating and lamination. If your brand colour is one of those three, we will send a first-article proof and ask you to sign off before the full run.

What we test before it ships

Our in-house checks cover three failures that happen in real shipping. 1.2 m six-face drop test with the bottle loaded. Stacking top load 40 kg or more for 24 hours. Truck and sea vibration simulation, no internal movement. If the bottle shifts, the insert fails.

A drop test catches the obvious breakage. Stacking catches slow collapse. Vibration catches the sneaky one: the bottle that rotates half a turn over three days on a truck and arrives with the label scuffed against the insert wall. We check for all three.

When this is the wrong box

Do not choose a single-bottle spirits gift box if you need to ship two bottles in one unit. The structure is not designed for side-by-side weight. Do not choose it if your bottle has an unusual shape like a square decanter or a very long neck. We can build for those, but the insert becomes custom tooling and the cost changes.

If you are shipping unboxed bottles inside a larger carton, this solution is overkill. The gift box is for the moment the bottle is handed over, not for pallet freight. Use a shipping box for freight and put the gift box inside it. That is the correct sequence.

How to specify the job

Send the bottle sample or exact dimensions, a reference design if you have one, the quantity, and any special requirements like foil colour or insert material. We will return a blank sample for structure approval first, then a printed sample for visual approval. Blank sample shows the fit. Printed sample shows the brand.

The eight production steps are online consultation, design confirmation, plate making and proofing, machine printing, machine lamination, machine box making, hand assembly, quality inspection and packing. Hand assembly is where the insert gets fitted and the magnet gets checked. That is the step that catches the small errors.

Questions buyers ask

What if I don't have a physical bottle sample yet?

You can send exact dimensions: overall height, maximum diameter, and filled weight. But a physical sample is always better. We have seen dimension sheets that missed a shoulder curve by 2 mm, and that was enough to make the insert fail the tilt test. If you can send one bottle, send it.

Can the same insert fit two different bottle shapes in my range?

Sometimes, if the larger profile drives the tooling and the smaller bottle still passes the four-point hold and shake test. We will tell you honestly. If the shoulder angles are very different, you need two inserts. One insert that tries to fit both often ends up holding neither securely.

Which insert material should I choose for a premium spirits gift?

Velvet tray reads as the most premium and suits a lid-and-base rigid box. EVA foam is more precise for unusual bottle shapes and gives a snugger fit. Paper mould is lighter and cheaper but feels less luxurious. Tell us the price point and the bottle weight, and we will recommend one.
