Custom Wine Gift Box Manufacturing
Custom wine gift boxes go wrong when the structure, insert, and print are decided in separate conversations. Here is the eight-step process we run, the decisions you make at each step, and what to send so the first sample is already close to the box you want.
Eight steps from brief to shipment
Online consultation
You tell us the bottle, the occasion, and the budget. We ask about quantity, target market, and any brand files you already have. Nothing gets quoted until we know the bottle size and the insert type.
Design confirmation
We turn the consultation into a structure drawing and a print layout. You approve the box style, the material direction, and the position of your logo. This is the step where changing a magnetic closure for a drawer still costs nothing.
Plate making and proofing
We make the printing plates and produce a proof on the actual facing paper. You check the color against your Pantone reference and confirm the artwork is placed correctly. Black, deep blue, and burgundy get extra attention here because they are the hardest to hold.
Machine printing
The approved proof goes to press. Mid-run sampling keeps the color on track, especially for large solid areas. You do not need to be involved unless we flag a shift that requires your call.
Machine lamination
The printed sheets are laminated before they are glued to greyboard. You already chose the finish in design confirmation, so this step is about control: no bubbles, no peeling at the edges, no moisture trapped under the film.
Machine box making
The laminated sheets are cut, creased, and wrapped onto greyboard. For foldable boxes, the creases must not crack and the corners must sit at 90 degrees when erected. You approve the first off-line box before we run the balance.
Hand assembly
Inserts are fitted, magnets are set, and handles are attached. Your insert tolerance is plus or minus 1 mm and the box body plus or minus 2 mm, checked on every run. This is the step where we catch a bottle that rattles or a neck that is not supported.
Quality inspection and packing
In-house checks include a 1.2 m six-face drop test with the bottle loaded, top load of 40 kg or more for 24 hours, and vibration simulation for truck and sea freight. You get a packing list and photos before the boxes leave the factory.
What to send
- Box dimensions or the bottle sample itself
- Reference design, even a rough sketch or a photo
- Quantity, even a range
- Special requirements: insert type, finish, any brand files
Two samples
We make two sample types. A blank sample is the structure only: same greyboard, same insert, same closure, no print. Use it to check the fit, the unboxing feel, and the drop test result. A printed sample is the visual sample: the actual facing paper with your artwork and finish. Use it to approve color, logo placement, and the feel of the lamination. Most buyers order the blank sample first, then the printed sample, so a structure change does not force a reprint. Both are made before mass production starts.
Payment and shipping
We accept T/T and PayPal. Shipping is by air, sea, or express, and we quote all three so you can balance speed against freight cost. Payment terms are set at the consultation step and confirmed before we start the plates.
What makes it run cleanly
The bottle is the spec. When a buyer sends only the box dimensions, we work from those, but the insert is always cut to the bottle. A bottle that is 2 mm wider at the shoulder than the drawing says will not fit the insert, and the insert tolerance is plus or minus 1 mm. Send the actual bottle, not a catalog photo. If the bottle is not available, send the exact height, diameter at the base, diameter at the shoulder, and neck length. We have seen more rework from a missing shoulder dimension than from any other single cause.
The insert rule is four points of contact, no unsupported neck or shoulder. That means the bottle is held at the base, the body, the shoulder, and the neck. We shake the loaded box for 10 seconds, tilt it 45 degrees, and invert it. No movement, no slide, no release. A box that passes the drop test but fails the shake test will still feel cheap in the customer's hands. If your bottle has an unusual shape, say a long neck or a wide punt, tell us before the structure drawing. Changing the insert after the first sample adds a week and a set of plates.
Buyer questions
Can you match my brand color exactly?
We print to Pantone references and send a proof on the actual facing paper before mass production. Black, deep blue, and burgundy are the hardest to hold, so we sample those more carefully. If your brand uses a spot color, send the Pantone number. If you only have a CMYK file, we will convert it and show you the result on the proof before you approve.
What if my bottle is an unusual shape?
Send the bottle or its exact dimensions. We will cut the insert to the bottle, not the box. The rule is four points of contact, no unsupported neck or shoulder. We test with a shake, a 45-degree tilt, and an inversion. If the bottle moves, the insert is recut before the box goes to print.
How do I know the boxes will arrive undamaged?
Before packing, every order goes through our in-house checks: a 1.2 m six-face drop test with the bottle loaded, top load of 40 kg or more for 24 hours, and vibration simulation for truck and sea freight. We also pack with internal dividers and corner protection. If a box cannot survive those checks, it does not ship.
